Making the most of frontline staff in the NHS

Released  25 June 2010

In the second of our ‘Delivering more for less’ briefings, we identify areas where NHS trusts and foundation trusts could make efficiency savings by making the most of their frontline staff.

Data suggests there is the potential to make significant savings by making better use of doctors and nurses. The variation in nurse numbers, use of bank and agency nurses and grade mix suggests there is the capacity to improve productivity and reduce costs.

Organisations first need to understand the reasons for variations on their wards and learn from other similar organisations how savings could be made.

This is the second in our series of ‘Delivering More for Less’ efficiency briefings, which look at areas of the NHS where our analysis of local and national data shows that potential efficiency savings could be made.
