The environmental service provided by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is 'fair' and has 'promising' prospects for improvement.

The Council's environmental service has many strengths. The local streets and parks are kept clean and tidy and the Council empties people's bins on time and efficiently. Frontline staff respond well to the needs of local people and the service has generally got more efficient. Against this, its record on recycling is one of the worst in the country. But significant changes have been made which have already led to much more waste being recycled.
