Inspection under CAA

Auditors and inspectors work together to ensure their activities in councils and their partners are coordinated. The inspectorates involved in Comprehensive Area Assessment (CAA) are:

  • Audit Commission;
  • Care Quality Commission;
  • HM Inspector of Constabulary;
  • HM Inspector of Prisons;
  • HM Inspectorate of Probation; and
  • Ofsted.

Together with Communities and Local Government and the Local Government Association, the Audit Commission is committed to improvement. We recognise that the primary responsibility for delivering improvement must be with councils and their partners. This reflects the National Improvement and Efficiency Strategy (external link) and the complementary Prospectus 2008 (external link).

The roles of the Government Offices in the Regions, Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnerships and the inspectorates are set out in more detail in a Communities and Local Government narrative (external link) published in July 2008.
