Who we are

The government has announced that Comprehensive Area Assessment is to be abolished. The details and timing are yet to be announced.

Background

Prior to CAA, our community safety inspections focused on how councils were working with their partners to deliver safer outcomes. Our CPA corporate assessments also considered how well councils, with their partners, delivered safer and stronger community outcomes.

In addition to our community safety service inspections we carried out use of resources (UoR) assessments of police and fire and rescue services. Further details of these assessments can be found on the use of resources pages.

Future direction of community safety and CAA

For the first time, inspectorates will pool their knowledge and information to provide an assessment of how safer outcomes are being delivered in each area. The starting point will be the priorities set out in the Local Area Agreements (LAAs) alongside the Sustainable Communities Strategy as what matters locally varies from place to place.

Our people

Our work in community safety is carried out by our trained and experienced audit staff and performance specialists. Each one of our four regions has a dedicated community safety specialist who understands the local area and the community safety issues specific to that area. These specialists ensure community safety implications are considered in all our areas of work and support the CAA Leads throughout the assessment process.

Our regional teams are supported by National Leads for Community Safety & Policing and Fire & Rescue. The national leads work closely with our partner agencies and provide guidance on the national context of our work in community safety.
